This is the first of a series of blogs I will be writing about the amazingly versatile, indie record company: ‘Future Legend Records’. They have been acknowledged as trend setters by sources as high up in the music world as Tony Wilson (manager of ‘Joy Division’). They are also well known for their creative re-interpretations of cult movie theme tunes.
So far four singles have been released from the two albums celebrating their 20th anniversary- ‘The Future Legend Singles Album’ and ‘Forever Pop Noir’, which catalogue some of their most successful songs. Here is a link to their website:http://www.futurelegendrecords.com . And here is a bit about the singles so far:
ONE WAY TICKET TO THE MOON BY PSYKICK HOLIDAY
The trippy, skipping beat builds up tension like a countdown. The background chords jar your brain as it goes along. This is added to by spaceship- like noises, taken straight from a sci-fi film. It is a long song, and needs to be listened to carefully several times to take it all in. It uses tension to create a vast musical landscape.
PSYCHIC HOLIDAY BY PSYKICK HOLIDAY
The music is less trippy in this song. Instead Psykick Holiday, somehow manage to make the melody wriggle around over the course of the track. The lyrics simmer gently to the surface and then die back down again. It is a fascinating listen.
I’M NOT LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE BY ELEANOR RIGBY
Eleanor Rigby uses her distinctive voice to slowly seduce her listeners. She has a depth to her voice, which somehow stretches it into a strange parallel universe, where time runs in slow-motion and with a lot more quality. She repeatedly declares that “I don’t want to live my life like everybody else’ and judging from her voice she has achieved her aim. There is no-one else I have heard of that has a voice quite like that.
UP THE JUNCTION SUNG BY ELEANOR RIGBY
This is a song that Eleanor Rigby covered for one of Future Music Legend’s cult theme tunes albums: ‘Themes from the 60s: Vol.1. It has the same dazzling quality in her voice as her original tracks.
